Thomas Partey Returns to Boost Ghana’s Midfield

Deputy captain Thomas Partey makes his comeback after missing Ghana’s last four Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers due to injury. With over 50 international caps since his debut in 2016, the 31-year-old's leadership and experience will be pivotal in the Black Stars’ campaign to strengthen their position in Group I.

Squad Leadership & Key Inclusions

Crystal Palace’s Jordan Ayew will captain the team, which features three home-based talents: goalkeeper Benjamin Asare (Accra Hearts of Oak), defender Razak Simpson (Nations FC), and midfielder Kamaradini Mamudu (Medeama SC).

Other notable selections include Southampton winger Kamal Deen Sulemana, who returns from a long-term injury, and CD Lugo’s Jerry Afriyie, who earned his spot after an impressive performance against Niger in November 2024. A fresh addition to the squad is Christopher Bonsu Baah of KRC Genk. The versatile left-footed forward began his career at Accra Shooting Stars before rising through European football, first with Norway’s Sarpsborg 08 before joining Genk in July 2023.

Match Schedule & Ghana’s Current Standing

The Black Stars will commence a four-day training camp on Monday, March 17, 2025, ahead of their home clash against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21. They will then travel to Morocco to face Madagascar at the Grand Stade d’Al Hoceima on Monday, March 24, for their second Group I encounter.

Ghana currently holds second place in Group I with nine points from four matches, tied with leaders Comoros. Their qualification journey began with a 1-0 win over Madagascar, followed by a setback against Comoros. However, back-to-back victories against Mali and the Central African Republic in June 2024 reignited their hopes of securing a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
