Opoku emphasized the importance of putting past disappointments behind them, particularly their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Black Stars suffered a shocking exit during the AFCON qualifiers, leaving fans frustrated and disappointed. However, Opoku insists that the team is fully focused on redemption, and the World Cup qualification campaign provides the perfect opportunity to make amends.

“We needed to put that behind and move on, and also try and make it up to the whole country by winning games and qualifying for the World Cup,” Opoku stated.

Despite their recent victories, Opoku acknowledged that the road to World Cup qualification is far from over. He admitted that the competition is tough, with other teams in Group I also eyeing a spot at the tournament. However, he stressed the team’s unwavering commitment to fighting until the very last moment.

“We know it’s not a job done yet and it won’t be easy, but we will fight hard till the end to ensure that we secure the necessary and needed points to be first in the group and qualify for the World Cup.”

The Black Stars are aiming to secure their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup after making history as one of Africa’s standout teams in previous tournaments. Ghana’s first-ever World Cup appearance in 2006 saw them progress to the Round of 16, and they famously reached the quarter-finals in 2010, becoming only the third African team in history to achieve that feat. Their last appearance was in Qatar 2022, but they were eliminated in the group stage.

With upcoming qualifiers against Chad and Mali in September, Ghana must remain consistent and ensure they maintain a top position in Group I. The competition is fierce, as other teams, including Comoros and Mali, are also pushing for qualification.

One of the biggest challenges the team faces is overcoming their past struggles. Their 1-0 defeat to Comoros in November 2023 was a major setback, and since then, the team has had to regroup and rebuild under their technical team. The recent victories have been a morale booster, but the Black Stars must remain vigilant if they hope to secure a ticket to the USA, Canada, and Mexico for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite previous disappointments, Ghanaian football fans remain hopeful that the Black Stars will rise to the occasion and make it to another World Cup tournament. The team has a rich footballing history, and expectations are always high whenever Ghana competes on the international stage.

Many supporters believe that the current squad has the talent and depth needed to qualify, but consistency, strong tactical discipline, and mental resilience will be key. With the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Thomas Partey, and Inaki Williams leading the attack, Ghana possesses the quality to challenge any team in their group.

The upcoming matches in September will be critical in shaping Ghana’s World Cup qualification hopes. The team must secure victories in these encounters to remain in contention. Preparation and strategy will be crucial, as they will need to overcome both physical and tactical challenges posed by their opponents.

For now, the Black Stars remain focused, with players like Jerome Opoku determined to give their all for the country. The journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup will not be an easy one, but with the right mentality, teamwork, and determination, Ghana has a strong chance of making it back to football’s grandest stage once again.
