A terrifying highway robbery took place in the early hours of Tuesday, April 22, 2025, when a gang of eight armed robbers launched a coordinated attack on road users traveling from Donkorkrom to Adawso in the Kwahu Afram Plains of Ghana’s Eastern Region.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:00 AM, as seven vehicles—filled with traders, travelers, drivers, and Easter revelers—were stopped en route to the Afram River crossing. According to an eyewitness and victim, the masked assailants wielded weapons, including AK-47 rifles, and subjected the travelers to brutal assaults and theft.

"They beat passengers who couldn't provide large sums of money. They took everything—phones, wallets, bags—whatever they could find," the eyewitness recounted.

In one chilling detail, a motorcyclist who tried to escape was slashed in the arm by one of the robbers, further escalating the violence of the attack.

The Kwahu Afram Plains, which includes both North and South Districts, has long suffered from infrastructure challenges, particularly poor road conditions, which make it easier for criminal gangs to operate undetected. Residents have expressed ongoing frustration over inadequate security patrols along these critical transport corridors.

Although robbery incidents had declined in past years—thanks to the deployment of the Anti-Robbery Unit and SWAT teams under former IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare—locals say there's now a resurgence in violent robberies, affecting both lives and livelihoods.

“The robberies have returned. Traders fear the roads, and commercial activity is dropping. We’re suffering,” said a local driver who frequently uses the Donkorkrom-Adawso route.

The Afram Plains is often referred to as Ghana’s food basket, with a large portion of its population engaged in farming and trading. However, frequent highway robberies threaten to disrupt the economic lifeline of the region. Traders have begun avoiding the route, impacting the flow of agricultural produce from the region to major markets.

Community leaders are now calling on the government and the Ghana Police Service to reinstate and strengthen security deployments across the Afram Plains, especially during early morning hours when most travelers begin their journeys.

So far, no arrests have been made, and police have not yet issued an official statement regarding the robbery. Victims and residents are urging authorities to treat the situation with urgency before more lives are endangered or lost.
