2024 NPP Flagbearer warns against use of state institutions for political persecution
Former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has issued a strong statement condemning what he describes as politically motivated persecution by state security agencies under President John Dramani Mahama.

Dr. Bawumia accuses President Mahama of using security forces to harass critics and political opponents. |
His remarks come after a failed attempt by operatives from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to arrest Assin South MP, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, at his residence on Wednesday, April 9.
In a statement released after visiting Rev. Fordjour, Dr. Bawumia labelled the attempted arrest as a clear case of political intimidation, and urged calm among NPP supporters.
“Rev. Fordjour was in high spirit and undaunted. I charge all party faithful to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding in this period of unfortunate political persecution,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia directly addressed President Mahama, calling on him to “immediately rein in his security operatives.”
He warned that state institutions like the NIB should not be turned into political weapons to suppress opposition figures.
“The security institutions of our country must not be reduced to political tools used to harass and intimidate opponents,” Dr Bawumia stated.
The NPP flagbearer further cautioned that any attempt to reintroduce a climate of fear and lawlessness will not be tolerated by Ghanaians.
“Ghanaians will not accept this descent into lawlessness and fear,” he stressed, reaffirming the NPP’s unwavering commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and political tolerance.
The attempted arrest of Rev. Ntim Fordjour follows his recent claims linking two foreign aircraft that landed in Ghana to money laundering and drug trafficking—allegations that the government has dismissed.
As the 2025 elections approach, this development adds to the growing tensions between the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition NPP, raising concerns about the independence of security agencies and the use of state power for political ends.
