This move follows a disturbing wave of attacks, including the murder of two police officers on Sunday, April 13, 2025. The officers were among several victims caught in the crossfire of the long-standing Bawku ethnic conflict, which has now evolved into a direct threat against state security forces.

New Police Directive: No Movement to Conflict Zones

A wireless message from Inspector General of Police (IGP) COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, transmitted via the Upper East Regional Police Headquarters, confirms an immediate ban on travel for police officers and their families to Bawku and surrounding communities.

Key areas affected by the directive include:

  • Bawku

  • Binduri

  • Pusiga

  • Garu (flagged as a potential danger zone)

The IGP emphasized that both indigenous and non-indigenous police personnel are to refrain from entering or being stationed in these volatile areas unless on official duty with protective measures.

Stricter Safety Measures for Deployed Officers

Officers currently deployed in Bawku and other high-risk locations are now required to:

  • Wear full Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs)

  • Operate only under armored vehicle escort

The Ghana Police Service stresses that these safety precautions are non-negotiable, as unknown gunmen continue to pose an unpredictable threat to security forces.

Ongoing Concern Over Attacks on Security Personnel

The recent spate of violence has intensified fears among families of officers serving in the north. Citizens have begun publicly pleading with the IGP to withdraw security personnel from the region, citing continuous targeted killings despite peacekeeping efforts.

With the situation rapidly deteriorating, the government and security agencies are under pressure to reassess strategies and reinforce the safety of those tasked with restoring peace in Bawku and its environs.
