regional tensions.

In a fiery press conference during his first operational tour of Bawku as Army Chief, Maj Gen Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu delivered an unequivocal warning to those stoking unrest in the conflict-ridden town:

“Your days are getting numbered. Any attack on civilians or soldiers will be treated as extremism and met with full military strength,” he stated.

With rising insecurity and a history of ethnic tensions in the Upper East Region, Gbetanu reaffirmed the military’s commitment to protecting lives and restoring peace.

“There will be no safe haven for those causing this chaos. Every individual involved will face justice.”

Gbetanu also appealed to the youth of Bawku, urging them to put down their arms and choose a future of building, learning, and peace.

In the Ashanti Region, a violent robbery unfolded on the Anyinasuso-Sakam road, leaving a driver’s mate dead. Eyewitness reports confirm that armed robbers, masquerading as passengers, opened fire on a commercial vehicle.

“We heard gunshots and called the police, but the assailants had escaped by the time they arrived,” said Assembly Member Ibrahim Yogo.

The armed men stole a sack reportedly collected in Wenchi and fled, leaving commuters in fear and security forces scrambling to track the suspects. The event has triggered renewed demands for stronger police patrols on highways.

Another disturbing event rocked Nyinahini where a confrontation between local youth and soldiers resulted in one death and five injuries. According to Adom News, the clash began when soldiers confronted the group for wearing unauthorized camouflage outfits.

Eyewitness Reverend Francis Nyamekye said tensions boiled over, resulting in soldiers allegedly opening fire on the crowd.

One victim died instantly, while others were rushed to the Nyinahini Government Hospital, with one transferred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in critical condition.

From Bawku to Ashanti, these incidents reflect growing national tension, sparking urgent calls from civil society and security experts for:

👉 Community engagement

👉 Traditional leadership collaboration

👉 Improved inter-agency security intelligence

👉 Respect for civil rights during enforcement

As Ghana grapples with simultaneous crises, the need for decisive leadership, accountable governance, and dialogue-led solutions has never been more apparent.
