In what is shaping up to be one of Ghana’s most high-stakes political standoffs, a coalition of five political parties has announced a massive protest for May 5, demanding accountability over what they call a blatant abuse of power by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The group — made up of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) — issued a joint statement on Thursday, April 24, denouncing the recent suspension of the Chief Justice and the purging of public servants.

“This is not about politics. This is about principle. This is a fight for Ghana,” the parties declared.

At the heart of the protest is what the parties call an “unconstitutional suspension” of Ghana’s Chief Justice — a move they believe signals a coordinated attempt by the NDC to subvert the judiciary.

The coalition described the development as eerily similar to a failed attempt in 2010 to oust the late Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood.

“History is being repeated. We must not remain silent.”

The coalition further alleges that the Chief Justice’s removal is the first step in a broader plot to stack the judiciary with loyalists. They claim this is being done to facilitate constitutional interpretations that would clear the way for John Mahama’s potential third-term bid in 2028.

“This isn’t conjecture. This is a carefully calculated agenda,” the statement warned.

The statement also spotlighted the termination of public servants, accusing the government of orchestrating a “vindictive cleansing” of professionals who are not politically aligned with the ruling party.

“Is this the future Mahama promised?” the coalition asked. “A regime of fear, where livelihoods are sacrificed on the altar of political vengeance?”

Calling on religious institutions, civil society, and the “silent majority,” the coalition insists the protest is non-partisan and seeks to protect democracy, not party interests.

“To remain indifferent is to endorse the rise of an authoritarian state,” they said. “Be a citizen, not a spectator. Stand for democracy. Oppose dictatorship.”

The May 5 demonstration is expected to draw thousands across the country. Security analysts and political commentators are closely watching how the government responds and whether this sparks a new wave of civil resistance ahead of the 2026 general elections.
