The Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) has made grave accusations against Ghana’s suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkonoo, involving the alleged misuse of state funds for a private overseas family vacation.

According to Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Chief Justice breached government travel regulations by flying her husband and two daughters on business class tickets using nearly GH¢260,000 of public money. Additionally, Gyamfi claimed she distributed approximately $30,000 in per diem allowances to them, all sourced from state funds.

Speaking on Asempa FM on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, Gyamfi stressed that the official travel policy allows the Chief Justice to travel with only one person—typically a bodyguard—for personal trips. Any further expenses incurred for additional family members were supposed to be paid personally.

"If the Chief Justice includes others on a private trip, she must fund it herself. Not even economy class—she flew them business class and handed out dollar per diems too," Gyamfi criticized.

He further questioned how such actions could be justified, particularly when public confidence in state institutions is already fragile.

Presidential Action: Suspension and Committee Investigation

President John Dramani Mahama, in consultation with the Council of State, has suspended Chief Justice Torkonoo following the establishment of a prima facie case based on three formal petitions.

A statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications, confirmed the suspension and the constitution of a five-member committee tasked with investigating the allegations.

Committee Members:

👉Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Supreme Court – Chair

👉Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, Supreme Court – Member

👉Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Former Auditor-General – Member

👉Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo, Ghana Armed Forces – Member

👉Professor James Sefah Dzisah, University of Ghana – Member

This explosive revelation has triggered widespread public outcry, with civil society groups, opposition leaders, and governance experts demanding accountability and transparency in the judicial leadership.
