You’ve Been Deceived! Lack Of Sex Does Not Cause Mental Illness" – Dr. Mark Agyei Clears The Air

Dr. Mark Agyei debunks widespread myths, stating lack of sex is not a cause of mental illness.

Speaking in an interview with Okay FM, Dr. Agyei addressed growing concerns and misinformation surrounding the link between sexual activity and psychological wellbeing. His comments came in response to a caller who questioned whether a lack of regular sexual activity could result in mental instability.

“That is a false claim,” Dr. Agyei stated plainly. “If you want to have sex every day, it is your personal decision. Even married couples don't necessarily engage in daily sex—some have it once or twice a month. It varies from person to person.”

Dr. Agyei made it clear that there is no scientific evidence supporting the idea that not having sex leads to mental health issues. He emphasized that such claims are misleading and potentially harmful, especially to single individuals who may already be navigating emotional and societal pressures.

“If you live alone and someone tells you that you’ll go mad if you don’t have sex daily, that is absolutely untrue,” he said.
“Scientifically, there is no connection between sexual inactivity and mental disorders. If someone has mental health challenges, they are caused by other underlying factors—not the absence of sex.”

The experienced homeopathic doctor noted that individual sex drives and habits differ, and there's no universal rule when it comes to frequency. He further stressed that trying to conform to social myths around sex can lead to unnecessary anxiety and low self-esteem.

Dr. Agyei added that some people are naturally more sexually active, or even struggle with sex addiction, but that does not mean abstinence is harmful.

“Some individuals are overly dependent on their partners for emotional or sexual gratification, and in extreme cases, it might reflect deeper psychological issues,” he explained.
“However, those issues are not caused by a lack of sex—they stem from more complex emotional or mental health conditions.”

In a society where sexual activity is often linked to status, confidence, and even health, Dr. Agyei's remarks serve as a refreshing and much-needed perspective. He urges people—especially the youth—not to fall victim to sexual myths that may promote unhealthy behavior or guilt.

“It’s important to know your body and your needs. Sex is not a cure-all, and it’s certainly not the cause of mental illness,” he reiterated.

Modern health experts agree with Dr. Agyei's stance. While healthy sexual relationships can contribute to overall well-being by reducing stress and building intimacy, there’s no medical basis for linking sexual inactivity with mental health decline. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes mental illness as being influenced by genetic, psychological, social, and environmental factors—not sexual frequency.

  • There is no scientific evidence that lack of sex causes mental illness.

  • Sexual frequency varies from person to person—even among married couples.

  • Behavioral issues related to sex addiction stem from underlying mental or emotional challenges, not abstinence.

  • Sexual abstinence should not be feared or stigmatised—it’s a personal choice, not a medical risk.

Dr. Agyei’s remarks have been widely appreciated on social media, with many applauding him for clarifying misconceptions that often pressure young people into engaging in sexual activity out of fear or misinformation.

His comments come at a time when conversations about mental health and sexuality are gaining momentum in Ghana, with experts urging citizens to seek factual, science-backed advice and prioritize their mental well-being without succumbing to societal myths.
